Comparing job allocation schemes where service demand is unknown
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper a novel job allocation scheme in distributed systems (TAGS) is modelled using the Markovian process algebra PEPA. This scheme requires no prior knowledge of job size and has been shown to be more efficient than round robin and random allocation when the job size distribution is heavy tailed and the load is not high. In this paper the job size distribution is assumed to be of a phase-type and the queues are bounded. Numerical results are derived and compared with those derived from models employing random allocation and the shortest queue strategy. It is shown that TAGS can perform well for a range of performance metrics. Furthermore, an attempt is made to characterise those scenarios where TAGS is beneficial in terms of the coefficient of variation and load. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

متن کاملReliable location-allocation model for congested systems under disruptions using accelerated Benders decomposition
This paper aims to propose a reliable location-allocation model where facilities are subject to the risk of disruptions. Since service facilities are expected to satisfy random and heavy demands, we model the congested situations in the system within a queuing framework which handles two sources of uncertainty associated with demand and service. To insure the service quality, a minimum limit re...
متن کاملA simulation tool to validate and compare satellite TDMA access schemes
This paper proposes an architecture design for a tool suitable for emulating DA-TDMA (demand-assignment-time division multiple access) satellite access schemes. The tool presented, named FRACAS, is particularly suitable for comparing the performance of different satellite channel allocation policies. Using FRACAS, a service provider can choose from different policies for sharing a satellite cha...
متن کاملDynamic Load Sharing With Unknown Memory Demand of Jobs in Clustered Compute Farms
A compute farm is a pool of clustered workstations to provide high performance computing services for CPU-intensive, memory-intensive, and I/O active jobs. Existing load sharing schemes with memory considerations assume jobs’ memory demand sizes are known in advance or predictable based on users’ hints. This assumption can greatly simplify the designs and implementations of memory-centric schem...
متن کاملAuction or Tâtonnement - Finding Congestion Prices for Adaptive Applications
In earlier work, we had proposed a pricing model in which service prices are based on QoS (resources consumed) and longterm user demand, and also have a congestion-sensitive component to motivate rate and service adaptation by applications with elastic demand. The network is provisioned to provide multiple services, with short-term, dynamic configuration of network resources. Congestion pricing...
